Rickey has passions for communications, faith and justice - passions that perfectly intersect in his role as communication director for the Charleston Area Justice Ministry. His love for storytelling began in high school, where he readily embraced the idea of interpreting hip-hop music through the lens of Black literature. This increased in college, where Rickey wrote for his campus newspapers. It was also then when he sensed a call to ministry. Rickey obtained his Bachelor of Arts degree in Mass Communication from Winthrop University in 2015 before covering the North Charleston and religion beats for The Post and Courier newspaper in Charleston, South Carolina. He began his current role as CAJM's communication director in May 2023, where he enjoys telling CAJM's story to the broader community along with sharing individual stories of CAJM network members about why they pursue justice. Rickey is married to Zaria Dennis. Together, they enjoy traveling, reading and spending time with their two dogs.
