Amy Horwitz (she/her)
Administrative AssistantSince 2016, CAJM has benefitted from Amy's wide range of managerial and administrative skills, institutional knowledge of the local education system, and a deep desire to build relationships in the Charleston area.
Amy moved from Syracuse, N.Y., to Charleston just over two decades ago, where she was inspired by the work of local civil rights and social justice clergy who would soon begin to form CAJM. Eager to shift her professional work to more closely align with her ideals of fairness and compassion, she was hired as the organization's administrative assistant. In her role, Amy manages CAJM's administrative office and oversees bookkeeping responsibilities.
Amy is well-equipped for the role. She obtained a Bachelor of Arts degree in Anthropology and a PhD in Audiology from Syracuse University. Before joining CAJM, she worked as an administrative assistant, research assistant, assistant professor, and clinical audiologist.
Amy is deeply involved in the community. Since moving to Charleston, she's served on Charleston's NAACP, Charleston National Organization for Women, and South Carolinians for Drug Law Reform. Amy also co-founded MUSC Helping Ears with Audiology Resources.
The seeds of justice and compassion were sewn early in Amy's life. The image of seeing her third-grade classmates being punished in cruel ways by their teacher is etched in Amy's mind.
But now, through her work in CAJM, Amy values the opportunity to strengthen relationships across the community to transform the systems that cause suffering.
"Fairness has always been important to me," she said.
When she's not working, Amy enjoys walking, gardening, reading, and learning new things.
